Dental Care for Papillons

(Why Small Breeds Need Extra Attention)

A Papillon's smile is small, bright, and surprisingly delicate. Hidden behind those tiny lips is one of the most important areas of their long-term health — and one of the most overlooked.

Toy breeds are far more prone to dental disease than larger dogs, and Papillons are no exception.

A little daily care now can save your dog years of pain and your wallet a great deal of expense later.

Why Small Mouths Need Extra Care

Toy breeds carry the same 42 adult teeth as a Labrador — packed into a much smaller jaw. The result is crowding, which traps food and bacteria far more easily.

By the age of three, most untreated toy dogs already show signs of periodontal disease.

A Simple Home Routine

Daily care does not need to be complicated.

  • Brush their teeth several times a week with a soft toothbrush and pet-safe paste

  • Offer raw meaty bones suited to their size for natural cleaning

  • Use dental chews between brushings — never as a replacement

  • Keep water bowls clean and refreshed daily

Start gently with puppies. A Papillon who learns young that tooth-brushing means cuddles and treats will accept it happily for life.

Diet Helps

A raw, natural diet supports oral health by encouraging chewing and reducing the sticky residue left by processed foods. Soft kibble alone is rarely enough to keep small teeth clean.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Check your Papillon's mouth weekly. Call your vet if you notice:

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Red or bleeding gums

  • Yellow or brown tartar build-up

  • Reluctance to eat hard food

  • Pawing at the mouth

Most Papillons benefit from a professional dental check every 12 to 18 months — your vet can scale, polish, and address anything home care cannot.

A Smile That Lasts a Lifetime

Good dental care is one of the kindest things you can do for your Papillon. It protects more than their teeth — it protects their heart, kidneys, and overall longevity.

Brush gently. Feed thoughtfully. Watch closely.

Because a healthy little smile is worth every minute.
