Ear Fringes, Tail Plumes, and Chest Frills

A Guide to Grooming Your Papillon's Signature Features
Ear Fringes, Tail Plumes, and Chest Frills are all very important.
The Papillon is one of the most visually striking small breeds in the world — and that's no accident. Those sweeping ear fringes, the glorious tail plume, and the silky chest frill aren't just pretty extras. They are the breed. Knowing how to care for them properly is one of the most important things you can do as a Papillon owner.
These features should be preserved, never cut.
Let's look at each one.
The Ear Fringing
The long, silky hair that frames your Papillon's ears gives them that iconic butterfly appearance. Brush gently from the base outward 2–3 times per week using a soft pin brush. Never tug — work any tangles free with your fingers first. A light spritz of detangling spray can help on dry days.
The Tail Plume
The tail should arc over the back in a sweeping plume. Brush it out fully each week to prevent it flattening or matting at the base. This is also a great spot to check for grass seeds or debris after outdoor time.
The Chest Frill
The feathering across the chest and shoulders adds elegance and depth. A gentle weekly brush-through is usually all it needs — this area rarely tangles but benefits from regular attention to keep it flowing beautifully.

Treat these features with care and they'll remain one of your Papillon's greatest gifts.
