Papillon Ear Care

Papillon Ear Care (Why Those Butterfly Ears Need More Than a Quick Brush)
The Papillon's name means "butterfly" in French, and it's the ears that earn it — large, fringed, and set like wings on either side of the head. But that signature beauty comes with responsibility. Fringed ears trap dirt, moisture, and debris more easily than a short-coated breed, making regular care essential to your Papillon's comfort and health.
Healthy ears are dry, clean, and free of odour — check them weekly, not just at grooming time.

Here's how to keep your Papillon's ears in top condition.
Weekly Ear Checks
Lift the ear flap and look for redness, odour, or discharge
Check the fringing for tangles or trapped debris
A healthy ear should smell neutral, never yeasty or sour
Cleaning Technique
Use a vet-approved dog ear cleaner — never water alone
Apply a few drops and massage gently at the base of the ear
Wipe away debris with a soft cotton pad, working outward
Never insert cotton buds into the ear canal
Managing the Fringing
The feathering framing the ears is part of the Papillon's beauty and should never be trimmed short. Keep it tangle-free with a metal comb 2–3 times per week, and dry ears thoroughly after bathing or swimming to prevent moisture buildup.
When to See a Vet
Persistent scratching, head shaking, dark discharge, or a strong odour can signal infection. Papillons aren't especially prone to ear problems, but the fringing can mask early symptoms — so don't wait if something seems off.
Those butterfly ears are the Papillon's crowning glory. A few quiet minutes each week keep them as healthy as they are beautiful.
